Thirty years of Spanish title races, decided on the last day more often than anywhere else.
La Liga has a reputation as a two-club league, and the table usually supports it. What the table hides is how many of those titles were settled in the final week, and how many were decided by a result somewhere else entirely — a champion crowned because a rival lost away to a club with nothing to play for.
The 1990s in particular produced title races that turned on the last afternoon two seasons running, in almost identical circumstances. Deportivo and Valencia both broke the duopoly within six years of each other. And the clubs outside the top two have taken the title often enough to make the "two-horse race" description a description of a period rather than of the competition.
Every season since 1992-93 is below, focused on the deciding detail rather than the name on the trophy.
