Including the season where nobody was crowned at all.
The French top flight was called Division 1 until 2002 and Ligue 1 afterwards, and the period covered here spans both. It opens with the strangest entry in any of these lists: a season whose champion was stripped of the title, and whose runners-up refused to accept it, leaving the year with no champion recorded at all.
What followed was the most genuinely open of the big five leagues for well over a decade. Clubs from Nantes, Auxerre, Lens, Lille and Montpellier all took titles, several of them for the first and so far only time in their histories, and the winning points totals were low enough that a good run in March could decide it.
That changed sharply in the 2010s. Both halves of the story are below, season by season.
